TeraGrid Client Software
From TeraGrid Wiki
TeraGrid's Grid Infrastructure Group (GIG) is undertaking an effort to define, design, and implement a software distribution for TeraGrid that will give campus IT administrators a set of software to install on their systems and/or offer to their users. People who use this software on campus systems will find that it eases their way toward extending their computing to include TeraGrid resources as well as local campus resources.

Current Schedule
The following very high-level milestones are currently what appear in the TeraGrid GIG's plans. We need to keep these up-to-date as activities in the project change.
- October 11, 2007 - Requirements document is available
- December 24, 2007 - Implementation plan is available (Implementation details are being documented separately for the two main parts of this project. See the Basic Client Toolkit page. The Scale-Up Client Toolkit page will be created when work on that component has begun.)
- April 5, 2008 - Software distribution is available for initial uses (validation, early adopters, etc.)
- July 30, 2008 - Validation is complete, begin broad distribution and use
- September 30, 2008 - First round of broad dissemination complete, transition to ongoing maintenance complete
Activities and Accomplishments
This is a living plan: it will change and evolve, adding detail and accomplishments over time. Accomplishments against this plan should be added here by editing the text and making links to other documents and files as they become available.
Startup
Establish Mailing List and Wiki
- Mailing list is tg-clients@teragrid.org. Lee is the administrator of the list. To subscribe, send email to majordomo@teragrid.org with "subscribe tg-clients" in the body of the message.
- You're looking at the Wiki site right now!
Establish Collaboration with SI Team and EOT Team
- First step was to meet with Scott Lathrop to tell him what we can do and start talking about what he thinks would be useful and who we could work with. Several phone meetings were held, both with Scott and some of the Internet2 folks. A proposal was drafted to clearly lay out the possible directions for this project.
Development
Document User Targets and Specific Use Scenarios
See TeraGrid Client Software - Requirements for details on this activity.
Document Design
As indicated in the requirements section, the project will consist of two parts.
The first part will use the working title Basic Client Toolkit. This will be a package of software clients that allow for a user to directly interact with TeraGrid services. We will leverage the Virtual Data Toolkit (VDT), developed at UW-Madison, in developing this package.
The second part will use MyCluster (or perhaps something similar) to allow users to seamlessly run their applications on both campus and TeraGrid resources. We'll slap the working title Scale-Up Client Toolkit on this part of the project.
Implement Design
See the Basic Client Toolkit page for implementation details. A similar page for the Scale-Up Client Toolkit will be created when work on that component has begun.
Validation
Develop Validation Plan
A key element will be introducing the kit to TeraGrid campus champions.
- Present to champions at TG08
Validate Implementation with Friendly Users
Distribution
Initial Distribution
Documentation has been written on installing and using the toolkit in its current form. A preliminary version of the toolkit (packaged as the TeraGrid Client Toolkit (TCT)) has been made available for people to checkout. A release page has been written that provides an introduction to the TCT and links to the package and documentation.
